DIY Laundry Detergent

Here are the ingredients: (Baking Soda not pictured)

1 cup Washing Soda

1/2 cup Borax

1 bar Fels Naptha soap

1/2 cup Baking Soda (not pictured)

3 gallons of  warm water

First, I put about 4 cups of water into a pan and got it boiling

Next, I grated the soap with a cheese grater

I added the soap to the pan little by little until it was dissolved.

I put the 3 gallons of warm water in a 5 gallon bucket.

Add the soap mixture, washing soda, baking soda and Borax

Stir until mixture blends together

Let cool for 24 hours

Mine turned out pretty much the same consistency of regular detergent.

I washed a load of clothes in it and they didn't have a scent necessarily, just a clean smell.

 All in all it cost about $7 for all the ingredients that I can make several more batches from. The only thing that has to be bought every time is a $1 bar of Fels Naptha soap. I'm also planning on putting together a few more cleaning products from the baking soda and borax.

Today has been a good day! 

I had to go to Conway this morning for class, but I've been home with Jackson and cleaning since then. 

The weather is so nice, warm and sunny. I finally got to clean my poor, neglected house and Jackson got to play outside. Now I'm here trying to make my shopping list for tomorrow and blogging obviously. I'm thinking about making my own laundry detergent. I've thought about it for awhile, but never prepared myself to do it. I want something that has a scent, but on that's not too strong. I also don't think that my local Wal-Mart sells washing soda, but I have to make a trip to Harp's tonight so I can check there.

Have any of you ever made your own?

Any tips?

It would seem I have far too much time on my hands, when it reality I do not. I just want something that cleans my clothes better but isn't so strongly scented.
