Contentment

Since we've been out of college my husband has worked full-time and I have always been blessed to work part-time at various jobs. I did that until I finished school, and then we had Jackson. I always thought it was the perfect timing that I had him in my last year of school because I wasn't used to working a full-time job yet and we weren't used to having the money. I'm still able to work part-time after Ava gets here, but this time I'm actually making some decent money because I'm able to use my degree and teach at the University that I graduated from. So where is my problem you ask?

My issue comes from feeling like we don't have enough. No, neither of us has amazing salaries that afford us the opportunity to do whatever we want, but we have always have everything we NEED and most everything that we WANT. Here lately I've been having a mild freak out over our finances. See, at most part-time jobs, when you take off you don't get paid. I have a wonderful job at a doctor's office that has been flexible with all my scheduling needs for over 3 years now. However, when I don't work, I don't get paid. I also don't start teaching again until late August.

Don't get me wrong, we've planned and saved for me to be off for several weeks after Ava gets here, but the saver and planner in me wants to jump out of her skin at the idea of not having an income for more than a month. I know that everything will be fine and we will have everything that we need, but then my mind jumps to wishing we had more. I don't want more stuff, I just want more cushion maybe...(and a new car would be nice).  My husband had to remind me at lunch that our safety and security doesn't come from having money or things, but it comes from the Lord.

1 Timothy 6:9-10
But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

1 Timothy 6:17-19
Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.
Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Acts 20:35
"I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive."

Philippians 4:6-7
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

I wish I could have a billboard of these verses where I could constantly see them. Yes, it's nice to have money but when it consumes your thoughts is when it becomes sinful. Contentment is also an issue. I know I would be much happier if I were more content with what I have.

So, I'm really working on that and just trying to enjoy our last few weeks as a family of 3!

  1. I do have a billboard in my home exactly for that!!! I post several versed on there and rotate them often. It has very much helped me stay focused:) (Maybe I should do a blog post about my board we made ;) Sam made it out of old barn wood) You are so doing the right thing..... Your time with your precious babies is worth far more than any "stuff" you can get. Praise the Lord that he has blessed you guys with flexibility so that you can concentrate on being a mom and wife. There is no greater calling:) You will never look back and regret the time spent with your sweet gifts from the Lord.
