Thanksgiving 2013 + Our Thankful Tree

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving yesterday with family. Since everyone in my family wakes up around 7am or before, we got ready and went to my in-laws. My Mother-in-Law had a great breakfast cooked, and we hung out there while Jackson got to play with his cousin.
I had a few things to cook, so I got my green beans wrapped in bacon (without wrapping them in bacon) ready, and an apple cobbler. I decided that individually wrapping 30+ green bean bundles was not something I had the interest in doing.

For lunch we went to Jordan's grandparents, where we stayed the rest of the evening. We ate some fabulous food, visited and relaxed. Ava did much better than I expected her to since all of this was during her usual nap time. She actually fell asleep twice and got two short naps.

After dinner my Mother-in-Law and I went to Walmart to get a computer we had been wanting. I was expecting total chaos, but we got there and had a great time.
...and I was first in line for the computer!

The last thing I wanted to show you was our Thankful Tree. I wanted to do a post about this a long time ago, but never had the time to sit down and do it.

One of Jackson's days of homeschool we talked about how leaves turn brown and fall off of the trees in the Fall. I knew I wanted to incorporate this into a project some how.

We went out one morning to collect some pretty leaves that had fallen.

After we bagged up a few leaves, we came inside to make our tree

I bought a big roll of brown painters paper at Lowe's for $8 last year. Since then we have used it for wrapping paper, drawing paper and now something to make a huge tree out of.

I drew lines on the paper and let Jackson practice cutting.

Next, I drew a tree and let him color it brown

After a premature dumping of the leaves all over the kitchen floor, he painted some of the branches with green paint.

After that we glued the leaves on the branches, and I took a marker and wrote several things he was thankful for.
We also each put our hand prints on the tree.

I was pretty happy with the way it turned out, and Jackson was very proud of his work!

  1. I really love the idea of doing a Thankful Tree. What a great visual reminder of everything to be thankful for!
